Risk of breast cancer and iodine deficiency

Claudia Küpper, Brühl, Roland Gärtner, München

In Germany and worldwide, breast cancer is the most frequent cancer disease in women. The disease is caused by several factors. Of the nutritional factors influencing the development of breast cancer, iodine supply is discussed in the paper.

The formation of iodine lactones from lipids of unsaturated fatty acids could have a positive effect protecting these against oxidative attacks: iodine lactones such as -iodine lactone of arachidonic acid specifically inhibit subsequent reactions of activated growth-factor receptors and thus prevent cell division. Parallels of autonomous growth regulation between cells of the thyroid and mammary gland possibly explain the lower rate of breast cancer in women with a high daily iodine intake. Adequate iodine supply hence is important for the prevention of diseases of both thyroid and mammary gland.
