Are school cafeterias really so loud? Noise measurements in school canteens

Romana Braun, Selina Brutscher, Gertrud Winkler, Sigmaringen

Many potential visitors apparently avoid school canteens, as they are so loud. As there are no available measurements of noise in school canteens, the sound pressure level at peak hours, and the reverberation period T60 were measured in twelve selected “loud” canteens.

The mean sound pressure in the canteens was 75 dB. This means that it is about four times as loud as recommended in standard SIA 181 for sound insulation when building canteens. The reverberation periods in the canteens differed greatly and lay between 0.53 and 1.25 s. Sound insulation and room acoustics must be considered to a much greater extent when school canteens are being built or redesigned. Depending on each situation, measures to dampen the noise may provide a remedy, although action to reduce the noise will almost always be impossible to avoid.
