Nutrition of pregnant women in Austria

Nutrient intake, importance of supplements and fortified food

Nutrient intake in consideration of fortified food and the use of supplements by 260 pregnant women in Austria was assessed by means of a questionnaire. The evaluation of 24 h-recalls has shown that energy intake is below the D-A-CH reference values and that the relation among the major nutrients ingested is not optimal. Intake mainly of complex carbohydrates is insufficient. The results have also shown insufficient dietary intakes of vitamin D, folic acid, vitamin B6, iron and iodine. As 92 % of the pregnant women ingested supplements it may be assumed that the absolute supply of essential nutrients is somewhat higher.

To improve their diets pregnant women also use fortified food. The results of the study suggest that pregnant women should eat more vegetables to ensure an adequate vitamin and mineral supply. Consumption of bread and fish should be increased as well.
