From January to December 2006, the dietary behaviour of children and adolescents at the age of 6–17 is assessed in a module which is part of KiGGS . The study called EsKiMo (Eating study as a KiGGS Module) is conducted by the Robert-Koch-Institute together with the University of Paderborn, Nutrition and Consumer Education, and financed by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.

The parents of children under 12 years are asked to conduct a 3-day dietary record. Children over 12 years are personally interviewed about their food intake during the last 4 weeks. Interviews are based on DISHES (Dietary Interview Software for Health Examination Studies). The interviewed are also asked to complete a food frequency questionnaire once again which was already used in the KiGGS main study. All 2400 participants, furthermore, are asked to complete a short questionnaire asking for socio-demographic information, leisure time activities, school meal supply, body size and weight.

The study will provide actual representative data of the nutrition situation of children and adolescents in Germany. The data will be evaluated with regard to quantities of specific foods and food categories consumed and, after combination with the German food and nutrient database, with regard to nutrient intake. The combination of these dietary data and the KiGGS health data will allow comprehensive analyses of the relationship between nutrition and health.
