Present nutrient supply in children and adolescents in Germany – Results of the EsKiMo study

Gert B. M. Mensink, Helmut Heseker, Anna Stahl, Almut Richter, Claudia Vohmann

The dietary behaviour of a total of 2.506 6–17-year-old children and adolescents in Germany was determined from January to December 2006 in the EsKiMo study, the nutrition module of KiGGS, the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents.

On the average, intake of energy, fat and carbohydrates is largely in line with the reference values. However, the ratios of saturated to polyunsaturated fatty acids and of mono- and disaccharides to polysaccharides are not optimal. Daily intake of protein clearly exceeds the reference values, while dietary fiber intake is too low. Supply of vitamins and minerals, except for vitamin D and folate, is sufficient in terms of average values. 6- to 11-year-old children, in addition, do not eat enough of calcium, vitamin A and E, and especially girls of that age, not enough of iron.
