Validation of a short questionnaire for grouping individuals according to their intakes of cholesterol and unsaturated fats

S. Rohrmann, Heidelberg, and G. Klein, Mainz

Our study was intented to validate a short questionnaire concerning intakes of saturated fat and cholesterol. The SQ comprises 9 food items for cholesterol intake and 11 for the intake of saturated fat. It had been sent to a randomly selected sub-sample of 300 participants of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) in Heidelberg.

For 244 participants who returned the questionnaire a score for both nutrients was calculated and compared with cholesterol and saturated fat intakes calculated from a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) comprising148 food items. Both scores correlated significantly with intakes calculated from the FFQ (rsp = 0.49 cholesterol, rsp = 0.47 saturated fat). More than 50 % of the respondents were assigned by SQ and FFQ to the same consumption categories, less than 6 % to opposite categories. The validity of the SQ hence was satisfactory, i.e. the questionnaire is helpful in grouping individuals according to their intakes of cholesterol and unsaturated fats. EU04/03
