Oxidative Stress and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Elderly People

Elisabeth Fabian, Ibrahim Elmadfa, Wien

Since oxidative stress might augment cardiovascular risk factors, we studied oxidative stress and conjugated dienes (CD)) and the risk factors oxidized low density lipoproteins (oxLDL), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), homocysteine and fetuin A in elderly people (102 participants between 70 and 90 years of age).

There was a significant age-associated increase in levels of MDA and CD, accompanied by a signifcant age-related increase in oxLDL, ADMA and homocysteine, and a significant decrease in fetuin A. Additionally, a significant positive correlation between oxLDL/ADMA and homocysteine/ADMA, and a significant negative association of fetuin A/MDA was observed in this study. These results show that oxidative stress has a negative effect and increases cardiovascular risk factors in the elderly. The complex interactions between oxidative stress and the investigated risk factors are still not well understood. Modulating vascular redox balance might, however, have a positive effect on several cardiovascular risk factors in elderly people and needs further clinical studies.
