A new food pyramid

K.-H. Krumwiede, Nuernberg

In nutrition education, symbols are used for the transportation of information. Popular examples are the food pyramid and the food circle. The pyramid seems to offer some advantages compared to the circle which are discussed in this article.

Most symbols neglect the importance of beverages, iodine and sea food in the daily diet. The pyramid presented takes theses aspects into account. Special attention is paid to milk products as most important suppliers of calcium and to plant oils and nuts because of their unsaturated fatty acid content. The new food pyramid proposed by Harvard Medical School, Boston, is discussed as well.
