The objective of this paper was to learn about trends in food consumption over a period of 1984 – 2001, based on four independent surveys in Augsburg and its environs.

The first , the second (1989/90) and the third survey (1994/95) were part of the WHO MONICA project, the fourth (1999/2001) was part of the KORA project. A qualitative food-frequency questionnaire comprising 24 items was completed by men and women aged 25 to 74 years.

The results of 1999/2001 have been found to be in better agreement with the dietary guidelines than those of 1984/85. The frequencies of intake of meat, sausages and ham, eggs and potatoes had decreased, while those of poultry, fish, pasta, chocolate, cereals, milk, dairy products, cheese and mineral water had increased. These trends correspond well to those found in agricultural statistics. EU06/03
